Somewhere in the World a Child Loses a Parent Every 2.2 Seconds.
There are 143 million orphaned children living in the world today and as many as 100 million more children abandoned on the streets world wide, living in substandard and dangerous conditions (UNICEF estimates).
Generations of children have been left to raise themselves. What future awaits them? What future can be predicted for their countries?
Nepal and what we can do to help,
When a child’s relatives are not able to care for them, alternatives for in-country care are very limited, if they exist at all. The street or the jungle are in most cases the only option. Once in a while there is an alternative, such as is provided by Rescue Humanity, and Unatti House. Orphaned children that come to one of these and other c4gc supported charities are brought into a safe, family-based care system that gives them the opportunity have siblings, a house mother, and the chance to go to school and grow up happy and healthy in their own nation and according to their own culture.
If you would like to get involved The Center for Global Change has volunteer opportunities available through our partner organization’s in Nepal.
In this program volunteers will be placed in a children’s home located near the heart of Kathmandu. Some placements allow the volunteer to live within the orphanage, however, volunteers can also choose to be placed with a host family, or stay in a local Hotel. Your role as a Volunteer is to be a big brother or sister to the children. Other tasks may include teaching English, helping with medical visits, cleaning, paper recycling, gardening, teaching the house mothers how to properly clean, doing repairs, mending clothing, planning activities for after they return from school and perhaps preparing meals. Once the children return from school, your role will be to assist and encourage them with their homework as well as play with them. Some of the older children may be encouraged to develop skills that may help them in later life such as paper making, sewing or maintenance work.
Other volunteer opportunities in Nepal are in areas such as Health Education, School and Community Maintenance.
Every year we also do a Medical Outreach in a remote village in the Himalayas. If you love the challenge of hiking in the mountains, gazing at snow-capped peaks, sipping hot tea with new found friends, and giving of your time and talent to help others, then we have just the spot for you. You can become an important member of our team by providing urgently needed medical and dental care to the Sherpa people. No medical experience is necessary!
